Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki suffered a shocking defeat in the second round of the Wuhan Open, losing 7-5, 6-3 to qualifier Maria Sakkari of Greece. Despite the loss, Wozniacki has enjoyed a strong run this season, climbing the her rankings to sixth in the world by reaching seven finals, and the Dane said she was relieved to claim her first WTA title of the year last week at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
"It’s nice to finally win the title and hold the trophy, especially with the pressure every time I face the media, you know, asking how does it feel to have not won a title this year, your seventh try is coming up. It’s nice that I finally won it," said Wozniacki.

However things weren’t so smooth for Wozniacki earlier in September. Seeded fifth at the US Open, the 27-year-old was upset by the unseeded Ekaterina Makarova in the second round. After the match, the Dane criticized the event organizers saying she felt it was unfair that she had to play on Court 5 while wildcard Maria Sharapova was given top billing at Arthur Ashe Stadium that day.
"I wasn’t attacking Sharapova at that time. Everyone can make mistakes, I said that, but I think then you come back and you fight your way up. If you are clean and everything is good, you fight all the way back to the top and then you get a bigger court. I have no problem with that. But there should be equal treatment for everybody."
