This summer's World Cup has just wrapped up, but China's love for football endures. Although the country's currently not a major force on the global stage, it's not for a lack of trying in its thousands of schools. Many are now getting special coaching sessions from some of the world's top clubs. CGTN's Wu Lei visited one school in Shanghai which has teamed up with the 13-time European Champion, Real Madrid.
Not even the 35-degree heat wave in Shanghai could stop these young footballers from playing the game they love. Over the past 5 days, 12 year old Huang Haoming has been training with 15 other kids at this Real Madrid Foundation Campus Experience training site.
HUANG HAOMING STUDENT "Sometimes we have friendly matches, sometimes we play games. The coaches say playing too much may make us tired of football, and he always cares about whether or not we get hurt."
This is the second batch of Real Madrid's Campus training in China, and lasts through Saturday. The Real Madrid foundation says it is most important to improve their skills as well as some core values about sports.
RAUL DIEZ LORENZO REAL MADRID COACH "Teamwork, friendship, cooperation, Leadership, because if you don't have some skill, your teammate got it, if you are alone, you can't do anything, but if you play in a team, and your team go together to the same objective, so you can do anything."
This training costs about 6,000 RMB, that's just shy of 1,000 US dollars. And some parents say it is worth it for their children.
CHEN XINZHI STUDENT FATHER "Money is not the most important thing, the children's hobbies and interests really matter. We hope our son can learn and experience something different from his previous domestic coaches."
In recent years a lot of global football clubs have worked with Chinese schools and institutions to start the training for young footballers. As Real Madrid's first authorized cooperative school in China, Living Word Shanghai has hosted this training camp since 2014.
ZHU CHAOYUN, PRINCIPAL ASSISTANT LIVING WORLD SHANGHAI "Every year we have a summer and winter training camp with Real Madrid. We also have the PE course during the semester, so the students are very happy that we have this kind of training."
This year they will have 5 rounds of training from July to August.
WU LEI SHANGHAI "China has been promoting on-campus football as one of the key measures to develop into an international football power. More global joint-campus training like this is expected to further improve these children's skills and passion for football. WL, CGTN, Shanghai.
