A controversial move by Austria is angering Muslims around the world. The right wing government plans to shut down several mosques and expel dozens of imams to crack down on what it says is radical Islam. Our correspondent Michal Bardavid tells us more.
MICHAL BARDAVID ALMATY "Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced plans to shut down seven mosques and expel up to 60 Turkish imams and their families. Kurz described the move as 'just the beginning' of a crackdown on what he called 'political Islam", saying that 'parallel societies, political Islam and radicalization' have no place in Austria.
The government claims these mosques receive foreign funding - banned in Austria through passage of a new law three years ago. The imams belong to a Muslim group with ties to the Turkish government. Not surprisingly - there was an immediate and angry response from Ankara: The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a written statement condemning the action as reflective of an Islamophobic, racist and discriminatory wave that's washed over Austria and its right wing government.
The move is clearly going to strain relations further between Turkey and Austria - which has openly stated it is against Turkey joining the European Union. Michal Bardavid, CGTN."
