Renho, the first female leader of Japan's largest opposition party, has announced her decision to resign.
Renho took over the Democratic Party's leadership in September last year. Her decision to resign comes after the party suffered a heavy defeat earlier this month in Tokyo Metropolitan assembly elections despite the cronyism scandals that are besetting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
She said the Democratic Party now needs a new leadership to become an alternative to the Abe administration.
