China has called on the World Trade Organization members to unite to prevent the United States "wrecking" the organization with tariff actions. Zhang Xiangchen, China's WTO top envoy, said on Monday that the tariff plans contradict the US's own commitments that such decisions go through the WTO Dispute Settlement Body. The U.S. made these commitments at the WTO more than a decade ago.
The Chinese envoy also said the latest U.S. move, linked to alleged theft of U.S. technology, is fundamentally incompatible with the WTO. Zhang reiterated that China is fully prepared to react to the US measures, and would firmly take the WTO rules and other necessary ways to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
