Work has begun on the site of Taiwan tech giant Foxconn's new flat-screen production plant in southeast Wisconsin. Twenty-eight companies have signed on to carry out the preparatory ground-moving work. The ten billion dollar facility is expected to provide 13,000 jobs once it opens next year. CGTN's Dan Williams has more from Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin.
A busy afternoon of activity as the process of shaping the site for the new ten billion dollar Foxconn manufacturing complex gets underway. This farming area in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin is where the 20-million square foot campus will be based. The facility will become the first outside of Asia to build LCD screens. Twenty-eight construction companies have been awarded contracts totalling more than 100 million dollars to prepare the ground for the building phase. All but one of those companies is from Wisconsin.
GOV. SCOTT WALKER WISCONSIN "The focus is on Wisconsin first. Foxconn are working with us in the first place, they understood that was a priority for us. That is part of the reason they wanted to be here. Bringing together this Wisconsin first approach to make sure that we had impact all across the state of Wisconsin."
Among the companies to have been chosen is Michel's, a transportation and utility contractor based in Brownsville, Wisconsin. They hope it is just the beginning of a building boom in the area.
MARK HUTTER MICHEL'S VICE PRESIDENT "There are large buildings and a lot of site work that has to get done in a very short period of time. So it is a way to showcase our talents to a wider audience. And I think people, if they see the success of Foxconn, they are going to say hey, Wisconsin is a great place to do business."
DAN WILLIAMS MOUNT PLEASANT, WISCONSIN "Although a host of Wisconsin based construction companies are set to during the building phase of this huge facility. It is the longer-term vision, once the plant is actually built, that authorities here are most excited about."
GOV. SCOTT WALKER WISCONSIN "The jobs themselves in and around Foxconn, it is 13,000 direct jobs on site at its peak when it is fully operational. We are essentially picking up and moving an entire city of jobs into the State. 13,000 jobs is bigger than 96% of all the municipalities in the state of Wisconsin. So we are literally moving a whole city's worth of workers making good pay, family supporting jobs into the state."
Although construction work has begun, the official ground breaking ceremony will only take place in a few months. But construction is expected to be rapid with phase one of the facility expected to open later next year. Dan Williams, CGTN Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin.
