Israel plans to build island off Gaza

Israel released plans about the construction of an artificial island nearly five kilometers off the coast of the Gaza Strip.
Minister of Intelligence and Transportation Yisrael Katz released details about a proposal to build a Dubai Palm-style project on the Mediterranean.
According to a promotional video, the island would be 534 hectares (1,320 acres), and would provide the Gaza Strip with essential services it currently lacks, including desalination facilities for clean water and an electricity plant.
The proposal, which is opposed by the Defense Ministry, also included a plan to establish a port, cargo terminal and an airport.
Katz argued it was feasible plan and the best option for now, with the island's long-term status to be negotiated. He has pushed the idea for seven years, but has recently redoubled efforts to spread the word.
