France, Britain and Germany have proposed new sanctions together on Iran over its ballistic missiles and its involvement in Syria's war. The new move is considered part of an effort to convince the Trump administration to stick to the Iran nuclear deal, according to a confidential document seen by Reuters. CGTN's Guy Henderson brings us more in Berlin.
GUY HENDERSON BERLIN "The Reuters News Agency now is reporting that it has seen a confidential document, put together by the governments of France, Britain and Germany, proposing new European sanctions against Iran for its ballistic missile program and for its involvement in Syrian conflicts. Now the clock is ticking down at the moment to the 12th of May, the deadline for Donald Trump, US President, to decide whether to recertify the Iran nuclear deal or not, and there have been furious discussions, we understand, in the last few months between Europe diplomats and their US counterparts over what they might do to try and persuade Donald Trump to recertify that deal. One of the main sticking points is being that Europeans do not want to bring other security issues into the discussions when it comes to Iran's nuclear deal because they fear that might inevitably lead it to unravel. The US, on the other hand, believed that the two have to be linked, because in their view, Iran has being misusing their extra money that they have since being released from the sanctions as part of the nuclear deal, to spend it on in places like Syria. This, if it's confirmed, would appear to be the Europeans attempt to be compromised. Keeping those security issues out of nuclear deal discussion directly but still doing more to address the issues.
