Drones are getting more and more popular in Japan. But if you want to master the art of piloting, you need somewhere to practice. Chinese manufacturer DJI, a world leader in the industry, has opened up a drone arena for Tokyo enthusiasts. CGTN's Terrence Terashima reports from the Japanese capital.
Although Drones are getting more popular in Japan, its market has been rather slow to expand. Analysts say, this is partially due to the lack of ideal environment to fly the drones in Japanese urban environment, and tightening of the aviation law in 2015, made it more difficult to fly the drones. This made it difficult for the drone businesses to expand. However, the market is growing gradually, it is expected to reach 44 billion yen by 2022 and drone related services markets are expected to grow over 140 billion in the next four years. There is also a good news for the Tokyo drone enthusiasts. DJI, who has the majority share in the drone market here, has opened up a drone arena, where people can come and brush up their skills.
TAKEMASA AMANO DRONE BUSINESS DIVISION DIRECTOR JAPAN CIRCUIT CO., LTD "70 percent of our customers now are from businesses. People from construction or land surveys came and practice during the weekdays. But on weekends, or during the holidays, we have mainly families come to enjoy operating the drones."
Operating a drone is not as difficult as flying a radio-controlled plane, as it has self-hovering capabilities and sensors to assist the pilot. Such as preventing collisions. But it does need a bit of practice to maneuver the craft smoothly. Here you can practice without worry of crashing into obstacles. And if you are still not confident of piloting it with a remote, this latest model allows you to fly one with a mere wave of a hand.
GORO KATO PR MANAGER, DJI JAPAN "For the consumers, the latest model SPARK and MAVIC are popular, along with our iconic Phantom models. They are compact and easy to carry. And for the professional use, our Matrice 200 is well received among our professional customers."
TERRENCE TERASHIMA TOKYO It is not easy to fly your drone in a congested city like Tokyo. So drone arena like this is an ideal place to practice your drone skills. Here DJI provides various types of commercial and professional drones in a promising market. Terrence Terashima, CGTN, Tokyo.
