Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the country's Lake Baikal has extremely high levels of pollution.

Putin made the statement while speaking to local officials at the lake. He added that Baikal belongs to the entire planet and preserving it for future generations is a priority of the government.

Lake Baikal is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the world's deepest freshwater lake at 1,700 meters and is also the oldest at 25 million years.
