82nd Masters: Lin Yuxin marks China's rise in golf

As we showed you in the leaderboard, there is a second Chinese golfer in the field at the Masters. 17-year-old Lin Yuxin is earning the trip by winning the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in October, following the footsteps of Guan Tianlang in 2013 and Jin Cheng in 2016. And as one legend of the game suggests, this could be the start of the rise of Chinese golf. Our Jonas Gilbart has that story from Augusta National.
Like so many now excelling in the world of golf, China's Lin Yuxin began his journey in a familiar way.
LIN YUXIN 2017 ASIA-PACIFIC AMATEUER CHAMPION "I started playing golf when I was like six. My dad took me to the range, and then just kind of fell in love with the game. I really enjoyed watching Tiger play when I was like really little. So, yeah, that's yeah, I wanted to hit golf balls like Tiger."
Now just 11 years later, Lin is in the same field as his idol, showcasing the rise in talent in China, something Lin feels directly relates to opportunity.
LIN YUXIN SHOOTS 79 IN OPENING ROUND "Back when I started, the facilities and stuff were kind of bad. We were hitting like off mats, and it's really hard to find a property where you can actually hit off grass, so it's going to be like really expensive. But nowadays the China Golf Association, they're starting to build some practice bases. So, yeah, they're wonderful facilities, it's just easier for the kids right now to practice."
The legendary Gary Player has seen things change in China first-hand thanks to his years of work developing the game in the region and believes we here in North America have no idea of what's about to come.
GARY PLAYER 9-TIME MAJOR CHAMPION "It's in its infancy. It's on a massive rise, a massive rise. They are not very wealthy and parents have the dream of seeing their children do well and they instill a work ethic that is beyond our work ethic because we have a sense of entitlement and we live in the lands of milk and honey. So man, when they see a guy winning $1 million, they are out there at 5:30 in the morning and they are in the gym and they are working on the mind and they got a new concept. We are in for some mighty good players coming along, and they are right there now but it's going to be like a tsunami coming."
JONAS GILBART AUGUSTA NATIONAL "And it might not take long for the wave to arrive. Lin's win at the Asia-Pacific Amateur was the third for China in the last five years. And four of the top-five finishers in that event were Chinese including Jin Cheng, who played here in 2016 and will be Lin's future college teammate at USC. This new generation dreams of changing the game forever in China in a way they perhaps couldn't before and Lin hopes he is the one to take that first green jacket back home."
LIN YUXIN 17-YEAR-OLD CHINESE AMATEUR GOLFER "I think it's definitely going to be a Major impact on the sport back in my country. Like winning a Major is like a totally different thing than winning like a PGA TOUR event or a European Tour event, it's like definitely bigger and it means a lot to the crowd and to the media. So hopefully, yeah, hopefully, I'm the one to break that."
