Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Wednesday said the practice of "One Country, Two Systems" in Hong Kong and Macao has been a “resounding success" since the two regions' return to the motherland.
Xi made the remarks at the opening session of the 19th CPC National Congress in Beijing while delivering a work report titled, “Secure a Decisive Victory in Building a Moderately Prosperous Society in All Respects and Strive for the Great Success of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.”
"The development of Hong Kong and Macao is closely tied up with that of the motherland. We will continue to support Hong Kong and Macao in integrating their own development into the overall development of the country," said Xi.
Speaking of the Taiwan issue, Xi pointed out that resolving the matter "to realize China's complete reunification is the shared aspiration of all Chinese people, and is the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation."
"We stand firm in safeguarding China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and will never allow the historical tragedy of national division to repeat itself. Any separatist activity is certain to meet with the resolute opposition of the Chinese people," he said.
"We have the resolve, the confidence, and the ability to defeat separatist attempts for 'Taiwan Independence' in any form. We will never allow anyone, any organization, or any political party, at any time or in any form, to separate any part of Chinese territory from China," Xi stressed.
