Yuan painting and calligraphy exhibition debuts at Palace Museum

The exhibition “Paintings and Calligraphic Works of Zhao Mengfu” kicked off Wednesday at Hall of Martial Valor (Wuying dian) in National Palace Museum, showing the talent and skill of calligraphy and painting master in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD).

A total of 107 pieces of rarely seen art treasures, provided by the National Palace Museum, Shanghai Museum and other Chinese cultural institutions, depicts Zhao’s artistic span in calligraphy, painting and other classic works.

The two-phase exhibition is cored as his calligraphy and painting works covering the masterpieces like the running scripts of “Reflections in the autumn” and "Ode to wine deity" and Chinese painting “Drinking horses at suburb in the autumn”.

Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322 AD) was an erudite and virtuous scholar renowned for his attainments in literature, calligraphy, and painting.

Aside from his own high achievements, Zhao also emphatically called for the change of calligraphic style by learning from ancient models and the application of calligraphic principles to painting.

The exhibition, tracing back to his artistic origin and far-reaching impact to the following, presents the art panorama of the Song and Yuan dynasties to the visitors.

The exhibition will replace some exhibits in late October and run till beginning of December.
