African leaders have lauded the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing. Some said it was a platform for both sides to deepen cooperation, and others said it was an opportunity for the continent to reference China's development experience. Our reporter Su Yuting sits down with the President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo, for his thoughts about it.
SU YUTING CGTN REPORTER "What are your thoughts on the speech delivered by President Xi Jinping during the opening ceremony of the FOCAC Summit? What impressed you most?"
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "It covered so many areas. The critical ones. The critical ones being first of all, the principles of China engaging with Africa. It's important. Every nation has its own principle and he set it out very clearly. That he is seeking a relationship of equality, he's seeking a relationship of partnership, he's seeking a relationship of friendship. And that, therefore, will influence the rest of his policy and posture towards Africa. So that was very important. The spirit with which he spoke, the clear identification with Africa's position that you found in him, that his own sincerity. For me, that was the most impressive aspect of his speech. And I left, I had this feeling when I had my own bilateral discussions with him before the summit. But the speech of the summit went to confirm in this man we have a real friend of the continent. And I think that our generational leaders of Africa can ask for no more. China is today the second part of the world. And if you can say that the leader of that part is a generous friend of Africa, you are saying a lot."
SU YUTING CGTN REPORTER "President Xi stressed FIVE NOs in his keynote speech, which in specific are 'no interference with development paths, no interference in internal affairs, no attaching political conditions, no imposing one's will on others, and no political self-interest in investments and financing'. What's your response to that? How do you evaluate the significance of these FIVE NOs?"
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "The principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations that is an extremely important principle of international law. Nobody should have the right to interfere in the politics of any other country. You may have your own views about the politics of another country. But that you actively attempt as a foreign power to influence its politics. I think he is 100% on-track, that he made that as an important principle of Chinese foreign policy."
SU YUTING CGTN REPORTER "Against the backdrop of rising protectionism and unilateralism, what do you think is the significance of building an even stronger community with a shared future between China and Africa?"
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "For small countries like ours, a world which recognizes a multilateral approach to the resolution of international problems is a more comforting one. It's a more reassuring one than the one where everybody was going its alone. We don't subscribe to it. We believe that the open system, the world of free trade, on the basis of well-acknowledged principles and rules have served humanity well, has not served humanity for everybody as well as it should. The broad sections of humanity have more or less benefit from this sector. And I believe it is in the interests of humanity that we continue the system."
SU YUTING CGTN REPORTER "And what will the building an even stronger community with a shared future between China and Africa mean to the rest of the world?"
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "I think that the reaction for instance at the FOCAC Summit of the overwhelming number of the African leaders were there was to be very empathetic, to be extremely sympathetic to this position. And to accepted as a positive development, positive comment of the way in which international affairs should be regulated in the years ahead. I think that most of us were very sympathetic to it."
SU YUTING CGTN REPORTER "President Xi has proposed eight major initiatives. What is your understanding of these eight initiatives and which are especially important for the industrialization of Ghana?"
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "I think that when you look at it, each one of them has a resonance. The green connectivity, the infrastructural development, industrial transformation, because they are all parts of a package, the package of human development. This particular stage in Africa's history, where our economy is suffering from structural deficits that we have. These are concepts and ideas that will enable us to overcome them. And I would hesitate to pick one against the other. I think globally, all of them have a great deal of significance for us."
