The ground breaking of a new train station on Wednesday marked the start of construction of a high-speed railway linking Beijing and Xiongan New Area, an economic development zone about 100 kilometers south of the Chinese capital.
The 92-kilometer-long line links Beijing, Beijing’s new airport, which is also under construction, and Xiongan New Area, where Xiongan Station will be the terminus. It will reduce the commuting time between Beijing and Xiongan to within half an hour.

China is planning to build more railways near Beijing as part of a plan to coordinate the development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province.
The first stage of the plan includes a 1,100-kilometer-long high-speed railway, divided into nine projects with an estimated investment of 24.7 billion yuan (3.9 billion US dollars). Construction work will begin before 2020.
