Along with anniversary comes a lot of entertainment and activities around Qingdao this week. And the city's public square has been a hive of activity, with music, dancing, and songs. Our reporter Wu Guoxiu gives us a flavor.
This Bangladeshi sailor's Chinese song proved to be one of the biggest hits of the day. His pronunciations were nearly perfect, yet he said he couldn't speak a word of Mandarin.
SUMAN BANGLADESH NAVY SAILOR "Actually I don't understand Chinese, I just think and I try Chinese songs. I think it's a love song right?"
Reporter: "You know the meaning? It means 'the moon represents my heart'."
These performers, mostly sailors, arrived in Qingdao over the past few days. Crew members from Thailand, Vietnam and India were all keen to be impressive.
NITISH SHARMA INDIAN NAVY BAND LEADER "We hope your people will enjoy our band most, because I personally feel, by keeping China as a friend in our mind, we're putting so much heart, so we can entertain your people, I believe they'll enjoy us most."
But the PLA Navy band was the busiest of the lot.
Formed in 1986, it's the only professional ceremonial performance unit of the PLA Navy.
The audience consisted of mainly Qingdao residents, the PLA navy personnel, as well as crew members of the visiting navies.
WU GUOXIU QINGDAO "With most of the programs are themed around the sea, this joint navy performance conveys a powerful message of peace, ahead of an international fleet review. Wu Guoxiu, CGTN, Qingdao."
