The DPRK first started its missile program back in 1998, when it fired a long-range missile known as the Taeopodong-1. The missile sailed over Japan, and landed in the Pacific Ocean. Eleven years later, the DPRK tested eight missiles. Here's a look back at the progress it made.
The multi-state Unha failed, and two Nodong and five Scud-C missiles were successfully launched on July 5th, 2009. Another Unha-3 missile was fired on December 12th, 2012. The country said it successfully launched a Polaris-1 SLBM on December 21st, 2015. On February 7th, 2016, the DPRK launched the Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite into orbit.
Several attempts were seen that year. On September 5th, 2016, the DPRK said it fired three modified Scud missiles on the final day of the G-20 meeting.
In 2017 alone, Pyongyang attempted 17 missile launches. Its latest missile flew over northern Japan on September 15th and landed in the Pacific Ocean. Pyongyang also claimed to have the ability to target the United States with nuclear weapons.
