The Middle East region is set to get its first clean-coal power plant. Under construction near Dubai, and part of the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, many say the Hassyan Project is just one example of China's push for more sustainable energy, and that it shows China's growing position in the clean energy market. Rory Coen has more.
The 2,400-megawatt clean coal-fired facility, the first of its kind in the Middle East, exemplifies Dubai's efforts to remodel its energy structure. Among its standards, safety is the most important.
GUO XINJIAN DEPUTY MANAGER, HARBIN ELECTRIC OF CHINA "The project uses the highest world safety standards, but the standards are ambiguous in Dubai. Before the project started, we spent a lot of time communicating with local companies. We finally understand the standards needed to execute the project."
The project employs 2,000 people, many of whom work in extremely high temperatures during the summer months. Guo says his ten years of safety management in China is proving to be highly beneficial.
GUO XINJIAN DEPUTY MANAGER, HARBIN ELECTRIC OF CHINA "One of my most important roles is to build safety platforms for the workers. We encourage everyone to participate in safety management. During the busiest periods of the project, 80 percent of the workers are Chinese, so we need to focus on our own talent and expand our business in the future."
Financed by the Silk Road Fund, construction of the 3.4-billion-dollar power plant commenced in late 2016. Special care is also being given to the local wildlife ecosystem, with thousands of creatures relocated.
GUO XINJIAN DEPUTY MANAGER, HARBIN ELECTRIC OF CHINA "We have done a lot of work on biodiversity protection. Last year, we transplanted 28 thousand coral. The project is located in a wildlife reserve, so we monitor the wildlife every day in our construction area. We can see whale shark and Hawksbill Turtle in the sea, and meet red foxes and antelope on land."
The Hassyan clean coal project is only one example of China's green investments overseas. Others include Chinese cell and module manufacturer Longi Green Energy Technology, which has announced plans to establish a fabrication unit in India. While China's State Power Investment Corporation will work with Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power on a solar project also in Dubai. Guo says these projects show how Chinese companies abroad are concerned about achieving sustainable and inclusive growth. Rory Coen, CGTN.
