A chilling report from the United Nations. It says South Sudanese security forces killed more than 200 civilians - and raped 120 women and girls - in a five-week period. This comes during a shaky cease-fire between government and rebel forces. The UN and African Union - threatening to impose sanctions if it fails. CGTN's Girum Chala has more from a conference in Ethiopia.
Agreements after agreements are being breached time and again. The latest in such moves was seen right after the Khartoum peace deal inked by both President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar.
And it looks like the African Union and the United Nations are extremely disappointed at the South Sudanese sides.
MOUSSA FAKI MAHAMAT CHAIRPERSON, AU COMMISSION "The protagonists of South Sudan should honor their commitments. Now they have got into a situation where they sign agreements and to violate these agreements immediately. Today IGAD, the AU and the UN everybody is unanimous about the need to respect and to have decisions respected."
ANTONIO GUTERRES SECRETARY-GENERAL, UNITED NATIONS "The objective must be to make peace prevail. And that is much more important than the details of any specific power-sharing arrangements."
The humanitarian situation in South Sudan is said to be horrific. And the conflict has caused unimaginable hardship against the people of South Sudan.
The African Union and the United Nations contemplate slamming sanctions on peace spoilers is timely.
GIRUM CHALA ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA "The hopes of South Sudanese, the regional bloc IGAD, the AU and the larger international community for peace to prevail in South Sudan have been dashed, that is according to political analysts. And they say it is time to make the promises of imposing sanctions a reality to see tangible changes on the ground. Girum Chala, CGTN, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia."
