China's e-commerce giant Alibaba says that an average Chinese Alipay user born in the 1980s spent more than 17,000 US dollars in 2016 through their app, while official figures show that the average income of Chinese was around 11,000 US dollars in 2015. Over the past five years, China’s online sales of fast-moving consumer goods grew at an average of nearly 80 percent, far outstripping a 10 percent growth rate in the US and an eight percent rise in the UK. Most of the purchases are done by millennials – those born after the 1980s. CGTN’s Han Peng spoke to some of them in Beijing to find out what they are buying, and why.
