Martin Viz-carra has been sworn in as Peru's president, taking over from his predecessor, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who resigned over corruption allegations. CGTN's Dan Collyns tells us more.
DAN COLLYNS LIMA "Martin Vizcarra is the new president of Peru. He's a 55-year-old former regional governor most recently working as Peru's ambassador in Canada. He was sworn in a ceremony in Peru's Congress. His rapid appointment follows the shock resignation of Pedro Pablo Kuczysnki on Wednesday. He was facing an impeachment vote for alleged corrupt ties to the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht more than a decade ago when the political opposition released secretly filmed videos appearing to show members of his government and other allies attempting to buy votes against the impeachment from opposition lawmakers. It became clear he would have lost the impeachment vote and he offered his resignation on Wednesday. But he continued to deny wrongdoing and said he'd been the victim of a malicious campaign by the majority political opposition. Earlier today Congress voted to accept Kuczynski's resignation rather than impeach him ending the political crisis of the moment, but there's still uncertainty about how Martin Vizcarra - a little known public figure who had been the vice president - will be able to govern and if he'll be able to stand up to the dominant opposition party for the next three and a half years. Dan Collyns, CGTN, Lima."
