Analysts are saying that the trade tensions between China and the U.S. are hurting American farmers and companies. They say that the US is stressing how tariffs protect domestic industries but note that concerns over increased costs are rising.
American companies that rely on iron and steel are facing higher costs due to tariffs. The average American steel price was 476 US dollars per ton in October, 2016. That was before Donald Trump was elected president. Now, the prices are nearly doubled and have hit 900 dollars. Surging prices and supply uncertainties could hurt the industry more broadly. Fala Technology is a company that produces robots parts and it says it's hard to give customs a stable quote.
The company can transfer some newly added costs caused by the tariffs to its customers but some other companies can't. Skyline Steel is one of them.
Skyline Steel could face huge losses and reduce supplies significantly if it can't renegotiate prices with its customers. Construction firms would then have to delay their work. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has admitted that U.S. trade policies are affecting American businesses.
The Consumer Industries Trade Action Coalition says that 200 thousand workers in US manufacturing have lost their jobs as a result of the tariffs. With additional tariffs taking effect this month, the impact on prices and costs could be felt by more and more American companies.
