In South Africa, a fashion label got a major boost for being part of a line-up of designers to dress Beyonce at the Global Citizen Festival, recently held in Johannesburg. Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z were the headline act for the concert, held in honor of Nelson Mandela's centenary year. CGTN's Julie Scheier reports.
Quiteria and George hit the South African fashion scene five years ago. Their haute couture designs have adorned local celebrities and graced catwalks all over the world.
QUITERIA KEKANA FASHION DESIGNER "I'm obsessed with beautiful things. We offer something different, something unique which is an exaggerated luxury."
The duo recently stole the headlines for designing Beyonce's final outfit for the Global Citizen Festival.
GEORGE MALELU FASHION DESIGNER "She is the Michael Jackson of today. For her to wear Quiteria and George with all the big brands that were presented to her, and she only chose about six. There was Versace. There was Balmain and there was only one Africa designer, and that was us it means the sky is the limit."
QUITERIA KEKANA FASHION DESIGNER "And I saw her, and I said yes it's our dress, but it's not like oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. I mean she returned the piece, maybe four or five times. So, that whole process, it was more exciting than seeing her on stage."
For Quiteria and George, it's been an unexpected boom.
GEORGE MALELU FASHION DESIGNER "It's been crazy since Beyonce was seen in Quiteria and George. We get messages everyday, people wanting to just be a part of Quiteria and George, just to get a blouse or you know a shirt by Quiteria and George. So, that exposure has translated into business."
JULIE SCHEIER JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "Wearing a Quiteria and George design is about feeling beautiful and looking glamorous. When you look closely at these garments, one can see the love that goes into creating them. And Beyonce looked exquisite in her showstopper outfit."
