As Egypt prepare for their first trip to the World Cup in 28 years, fans in the country are hanging on every piece of news about Mohamed Salah. The striker suffered a shoulder injury in last weekend's Champions League Final, and is currently receiving treatment in Spain. The Pharaohs will need his prowess on the pitch to have any chance of advancing from the group stage. CGTN's Adel Mahrouky has the latest from Cairo.
Liverpool football club says Mohamed Salah has a sprain in his shoulder ligaments. But the exact nature of the injury has not been made public, leading to wild speculations.
DR. AHMED MAGED FORMER EGYPT PHYSICIAN "There is a joint between the clavicle and chromium process of the scapula. There is a sort of tear over here. This tear is classified as four degrees. I think Mohamed Salah is between three and four. I think it is a little bit dangerous and need a long time to rehabilitate."
Both Liverpool and the Egyptian Football Association say Mohamed Salah will be in the World Cup. There has, however, been no indications whether he will be playing in Egypt's first match against Uruguay.
"He may be (able) to join second or the third match, if everything goes smoothly without no interruptions, without no complications. But I think any fall down over his left shoulder, it will disturb him, he can feel a lot of pain. Liverpool will not allow Salah to play, except when he is fully recovered, and their doctors will examine him before he plays."
Egyptians are worried he may not be cleared to lead the team in Russia. The striker has been the team's key engine from the World Cup qualifying campaign. In the last two seasons, Salah scored more than 60% of the national team's goals.
AHMED HUSSEIN EGYPT FAN "When Salah was injured, Liverpool's performance was affected. So what about our national team? By comparison, his absence will be critical."
SHERIF SAEED EGYPT FAN "Our players don't play good football. They can't think without Mohamed Salah, and even if he were playing in a friendly against Colombia, he wouldn't be able to do anything. There are no players to assist him. We only have Mohamed Salah. No one else."
Egypt has remained winless so far in their build-up matches to the World Cup, drawing Kuwait and Colombia. They have one more chance to win before the World Cup.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO "Egypt's final friendly before the World Cup is going to be on Wednesday against Belgium. It'll be the final test before coach Hektor Cuper settles on the final 23 who'll make it to the World Cup. Even if he's not going to be fit, many want Salah on the roster. Mo's appearance among the national team has become morally essential for Egyptians, and the national team. AMA, CGTN, CAIRO."
