The 2017 Emmy Awards nominations were revealed on Thursday morning in Los Angeles, and the shortlist is marked by new contenders, reflecting a booming era for television.
HBO's new sci-fi drama "Westworld" and NBC's long-running sketch comedy "Saturday Night Live" led the nominations for the 2017 Primetime Emmy awards. The shows received 22 nods each on Thursday for the highest honors in the television industry.
With reigning Emmy champ "Game of Thrones" ineligible this year after it moved its seventh season to this summer, a door opened for five new shows vying for the top prize of best drama series.
The crowded race includes British royal series "The Crown" and supernatural mystery "Stranger Things" -- both on Netflix, Hulu's breakout dystopian women's series "The Handmaid's Tale" starring best actress nominee Elisabeth Moss, and NBC's emotional family drama "This Is Us."

Among the networks, HBO again had the highest overall tally with 111 nods. Streaming upstart Netflix followed with 91 nominations and NBC at 64.
The comedy series race features more familiar faces, with two-time Emmy-winning political satire "Veep" nominated again. Millennial hip-hop show "Atlanta," family racial comedy "black-ish," "Modern Family," "Master of None," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and tech comedy "Silicon Valley" round out the competition.
First-time Emmy nominees range from Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro for his role in "The Wizard of Lies," to 13-year-old newcomer Millie Bobby Brown for "Stranger Things". Britain's Claire Foy also got a nod for her portrayal of a young Queen Elizabeth the Second in "The Crown."
Co-presenter Anna Chlumsky was also nominated for best supporting actress category for her role on "Veep." Chlumsky said she doubts she'll be nominated every year, but is honored to receive a nod for the fifth year in row.
The winners will be revealed by host Stephen Colbert at a ceremony in Los Angeles on September 17.
