As China marks the 90th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army on August 1, its troops aren't just working to keep China safe, they are also participating in peacekeeping operations abroad.
This year, China sent its first ever batch of helicopters and pilots on peacekeeping duties in Africa.
It's seen as a significant move as previously, China had mainly sent engineers, logistical units or paramilitaries on such missions.
In this edition of CGTN's World Insight, host Tian Wei visited one group of pilots just before their deployment to Sudan began.
They explained more about their training and their hopes for the mission and also used the opportunity to pass messages to their families.
World Insight with Tian Wei is a 45-minute global affairs and debate show on CGTN. It airs weekdays at 10.15 p.m. BJT (1415GMT), with rebroadcasts at 4.15 a.m. BJT (2015GMT).
