China calls for all sides concerned to maintain the authority and effectiveness of the current arms control and non-proliferation systems based on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and not to adopt double standards and alternative practices, over failure to achieve a tangible progress on nuclear disarmament in the Middle East and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

While delivering China's statement on the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security Committee) during the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on Friday, Wang Qun, director-general of the Department of Arms Control at China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, despite the positive results achieved in the area of disarmament and its impact on peace, security and stability in many regions, the world still lacks security and stability.

"The current world is in a period of great development, great change and great adjustment. Meanwhile, global security is facing new challenges. The new security challenges and new situations call for new security governance," said Wang.

Chinese President Xi Jinping advocated that all countries uphold common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security notions, cultivate the awareness of a community of shared future for the mankind, and work together to build new types of international relations based on win-win cooperation. Those important ideas have enlightened the direction for strengthening global security governance, and provided a viable path for maintaining world peace and security, Wang said.

Wang said that the goal of building a community with a shared future is aimed at building a world with lasting peace, universal security and common prosperity, and to create a secure structure with justice and sharing.

Wang stressed that China has always been committed to maintaining world peace and security, and actively promoting the arms control and non-proliferation process, and has made important contributions to strengthening global security governance.
