In Morocco, a historic agreement on migrants and migration has been adopted. UN members agreed on the first Global Compact for Migration, or GCM, without support from the US and some European nations. CGTN's Jane Kiyo has more.
JANE KIYO MARRAKECH "The GCM has been hailed as a major breakthrough in the management of Migrants. Its adoption by 164 countries came after almost two years of debate and negotiations. The non-binding accord calls for safe and orderly Migration."
ANTONIO GUTERRES UN SECRETARY GENERAL "It is also true that 80 percent of the migrants that live in the world have done so in a safe and orderly way. But we cannot forget the tragedies that we witness every day in deserts, in the sea, everywhere, where people trying to have a better life put themselves in the hands of traffickers and smugglers, that dramatically violate their human rights and cause so many to die."
The UN says up to 60,000 Migrants have died or gone missing since 2000. Ten including the U.S have opted out following fears that it may infringe on its policies while others, especially in Europe, fear an influx of refugees.
LEONARD DOYLE UN MIGRATION AGENCY SPOKESPERSON "We are not going to start advocating for no borders. We are not going to start advocating for we are moving the sovereignty of countries over their migration. Absolutely not. Migration needs to be a balanced process. Countries need to feel secured."
JANE KIYO MARRAKECH "With Migrant Numbers projected to rise from the current 250M, experts have said the accord may not be the miracle they're looking for -but given the necessity -it's a start. And given its non-binding nature, its success will largely depend on the political goodwill of member countries JK, CGTN, M, M."
