The ASEAN-China ministerial meeting ended on a high note in Singapore, with both sides reiterating growing ties between them, and laid out plans for stronger strategic partnership. Our correspondent Miro Lu has more.
China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have arrived at a single draft negotiating text of the Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea. A significant progress - the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said - the document will serve as the basis of future COC negotiations.
The China-ASEAN cooperation plan has been elevated to a new high, Wang also said, noting that the two sides have reached consensus on the Strategic Partnership Vision 2030.
Cooperation will be broadened in political, security, innovation and people to people and cultural exchanges.
MIRO LU SINGAPORE "At the press conference after the China-ASEAN ministerial meeting, Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi responded to the escalating trade tension between China and the US. He said that seeking to resolve one's trade concerns with unilateral activities goes against the basic rules of WTO."
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "They are running against the trend of the times, and are not in the right direction. Instead of achieving one's own goals by doing this, we believe it will only hurt the interests of oneself."
The trade war between the United States and China hit another road bump on Wednesday. US President Trump said he's considering plans to raise the tariffs of US$200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent instead of the 10 percent proposed earlier.
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "Many products made in China are no longer manufactured in the United States. So does it mean that the US tariffs were intended to raise their living costs for American consumers or to burden them? Another point is that if the US were able to reduce the import of China-made products - via the tariffs - but they still import similar products from other countries, it doesn't solve what the US calls a 'trade imbalance' issue."
For ASEAN members who benefited from the multilateral system, they are committed to free trade. ASEAN and China aim to reach a joint target of 1 trillion US dollar in trade and 150 billion US dollars in investment by 2020. Miro Lu, CGTN, Singapore.
