Renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76. A spokesman made the announcement for the family. In a statement, Hawking's children - Lucy, Robert, and Tim - said, in their own words, "he was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years".
Hawking was an English scientist and cosmologist. He was the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, at the University of Cambridge.
He also authored "A Brief History of Time", a popular-science book on cosmology. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology, explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.
He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. We'll bring you the latest on his passing throughout the day.
