Tomorrow marks International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. China's State Council Information Office has introduced a new drug rehab system; one expected to work across the country where others have failed. CGTN's Mark Fontes reports.
In recent years, Chinese drug rehabilitation agencies have stepped up efforts to curb drug use nationally. They have taken comprehensive, scientific and people-friendly measures. In the past, differences in drug rehab practices across China led to an unbalanced treatment system. Some provinces suffer from a lack of rehab resources, whereas others offer high-quality treatments. Now a new national system looks to level the playing field.
LIU ZHIQIANG VICE MINISTER OF JUSTICE "Measures include trans-cranial magnetic simulation and virtual reality drug addiction assessment. When applied, users start to abandon drugs mentally. We hope these measures play an active role in health recovery, confidence-building and anti-relapse efforts."
In order to keep pace with the science-based rehab concept, China continues to explore new technologies and methods to help drug users free themselves from addiction.
CAO XUEJUN, HEAD OF DRUG ADMINISTRATION MINISTRY OF JUSTICE "We have established a nationwide working mode of judicial administrative drug rehabilitation. It will manage and specialize the rehab system. For example, we have set up a unified standard for rehab education, medical management and physical training in different regions."
Long-term drug addiction will not just harm users' health, but will also lead to criminal activity. And even with a successful national rehab system now in place, experts say there's still a long way to go with drug rehab. Mark Fontes, CGTN.
