Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen confirmed on Tuesday that Tainan City Mayor Lai Ching-te will head the island region’s executive authority, after accepting the resignation of Lin Chuan on Monday.
The 57-year-old has been mayor of Tainan, one of Taiwan’s largest cities, since 2010. It is hoped he will be able to reinvigorate the Tsai administration, which has faced plummeting public support.
Lin had led the executive authority since the Democratic Progressive Party took office on May 20, 2016, but he offered his resignation after struggling to implement a series of unpopular reforms.
Lai is expected to lead a new-look team, with local media reporting that a wider reshuffle is expected this week.
