Madrid is hosting the world's most important congress in the field of organ donation and transplants. The focus is on academic studies, clinical research and medical ethics of organ donation and procurement. More than 3,000 experts and scholars from 105 countries are there, including over 150 from China.
This is the 27th International Congress of the Transplantation Society. The biennial event is the largest and most authoritative academic conference in the field.
More than 150 Chinese experts are taking part. They're introducing the country's progress and experience.
MARTI MANYALICH, PRESIDENT INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR ORGAN DONATION AND PROCUREMENT "China has made great achievements in organ transplantation in the past five years. This is also the achievement of the whole world. I'm pretty certain this provides a feasible pattern for Asia. China's neighboring countries are speaking highly of China's development in this field as well."
The recognition and support from the international community is not just encouraging. It also helps shut down rumor of using organs from executed prisoners.
WANG HAIBO, DIRECTOR CHINA ORGAN TRANSPLANT RESPONSE SYSTEM RESEARCH CENTER "We have plenty of heart-warming stories of organ donation. Donation from fathers, mothers and children. Rumors for political purpose are a discredit. We are indignant. This hurts our donors and families of donors. It also hurts Chinese people and those who devote themselves to organ donation and transplant. International leaders in the field are as furious as well, because organ donation and transplant is our life-long cause that deserves respect.
In recent years, China has developed a new system with 178 organ transplant institutions. Donation and transplant numbers are on the rise. In 2017, China ranked second in the world with 5,146 donations and over 16 thousand transplants. By May this year, China had over 17.6 thousand donations and more than 65 thousand transplants. Given its huge population, China is determined to play an important role in this crucial field.
