Public hearings are underway in Washington - over proposed tariffs on approximately 50 billion dollar worth of Chinese goods. That tariff threat is part of the United States' response to what they call unfair trade practices by China. CGTN's White House Correspondent Nathan is outside the hearing with the latest.
NATHAN KING, WASHINGTON "I can tell you there are very strong arguments from companies who think these tariffs were destroying their customer base and also those who want protection. We speak to people from both sides of the debate."
JAY LIAN, LAWYER, PATENT PROTECTION ASSOC. OF CHINA "I think, I mean, maybe some isolated industry may benefit in the short term in this trade war -if there's any- but I think in the long run everybody loses."
TIM MOSS, SPOKESMAN, ZOELLER PUMP COMPANY "We're a family-owned sump and sewage pump company in Louisville, Kentucky- Zoeller Pump. Established in 1939. Currently, most of our competitors import entire pumps from China at much lower cost. We manufacture in the United States. It costs more to manufacture here. We just want a level playing field."
NATHAN KING, WASHINGTON "So breaks over, time to go back here. A lot more hearings and a lot more companies giving testimony. The big question is will it change any minds of the White House. Let's go in. Nathan King, CGTN, Washington."
