Spain's Guardia Civil police force arrested the Catalan region's junior economy minister, Josep Maria Jove, on Wednesday during a morning raid on several government offices, police and the Catalonia regional government said.
The arrest comes amid mounting tensions over Catalonia's plans to hold an independence referendum on October 1 which is deemed illegal by Madrid.
During the raid, police entered local government offices of the economy, interior, foreign affairs, welfare, telecommunications and tax ministries, Reuters reported, citing sources within the regional government.
