A landmark building in Cairo has opened its doors to the public. Abdeen was the palace of Egyptian rulers from the 17th century until the middle of the last century. Visitors now have the opportunity to marvel at its interior design and more than 5 hundred suites. Here is Adel el Mahrouky with more.
Unlike any royal palace in Egypt, Abdeen was built without visual barriers between it and the public. Egyptian Khedive Ismail commissioned its construction in 1863. By 1872, it has been the ruling palace of Egypt until the 1952 revolution that has founded the Republic of Egypt.
AMR TALAAT MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS, EGYPT "Abdeen has a political significance to it. It was the transformation of Egypt into a constitutional state in the middle of the 19th century, hence, it was the civil palace rather than a military citadel that was the seat of the ruler before Abdeen, and this gave it uniqueness from all the other palaces in Egypt,"
Among its 550 chambers the throne Hall is the most outstanding. Designed in Islamic architecture and rare marble artwork, here is where Egyptian kings got coronated.
Calligraphy on the walls are phrases of wisdom highlighting the Characters of a just ruler. The marble Byzantine living room is equally impressive. It's Mosaics reflect the talent of artists summoned from all over the world.
Italian, Turkish and French artists and architects have been brought to complete these masterpieces of interior design. Different origins of art have been brilliantly infused in a harmonious blend accentuating the diversity of this palace.
AMR TALAAT MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS, EGYPT "Abdeen Palace represents a glorified part of our history. Not only because of architectural beauty and the antiquities in the palace, but also because of the great events the palace has witnessed throughout the 150 years since it was established. It crystalizes that Egypt history is so wide rich and diversified, starting from the pyramids to this palace built in the 19th century, yet extremely impressive."
Abdeen is filled with rare European and Asian paintings, which Egypt's royals have been keen to collect. From Beijing to Paris, the priceless artifacts that decorate all rooms, were gifts from leaders of great nations at the time.
It's a reflection of the political significance Egypt enjoyed in the 19th century.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO, EGYPT "This unique palace with its magnificent architecture and treasures is now open for the public. And it's one of very few places in Egypt that can be visited. Adel EL Mahrouky, CGTN, CA."
