A healthy first quarter for China's economy allays some early concerns about an uncertain 2019. Many of the nation's central state-owned enterprises, or SOE's saw growth. Experts say some leading indicators of the operation of the national economy reflect a steady development of the economy. CGTN's Mark Fontes explains.
Reining in mounting debt and guarding against financial risks, China's economic priorities for 2019.
With operating revenue reported at 6.8 trillion yuan, just over 1 trillion US dollars. This equated to a 6.3 percent increase over the same period last year.
Total profit for the quarter came in at more than 426.5 billion yuan. Industries like mining, military and transportation outperformed expectations.
The central government's decision-making and deployment provides a fundamental guarantee for China's central SOE's, to maintain a stable and positive situation.
PENG HUAGANG, SECRETARY GENERAL STATE-OWNED ASSETS SUPERVISION AND ADMINISTRATION COMMISSION OF THE STATE COUNCIL "We focused on filling the short board, continued deepening supply-side structural reform and vigorously promoted high-quality development. These measures effectively improved the macro-economic environment."
Central SOEs also saw 384 billion yuan of fixed asset investment during the first three months of the year.
Meanwhile, officials say promoting state-owned capital investment is an important measure during the reform of state-owned enterprises.
PENG HUAGANG, SECRETARY GENERAL STATE-OWNED ASSETS SUPERVISION AND ADMINISTRATION COMMISSION OF THE STATE COUNCIL "The internal operating mechanism should be further strengthened, including mixed-ownership reform, the board of directors, and the exploration of the professional managers' system."
The government says while it is still exploring the transformation of development, fixed-asset investment is increasing.
Due to the various departments involved in the reform process, experts say it will take some time to achieve the nationwide goal.
