Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the implementation of the ceasefire in Syria's eastern Ghouta. The ceasefire deal by the UN Security Council demands a 30-day truce across Syria, to allow for aid access and medical evacuations. But Turkey says the deal does not apply to its offensive in Afrin.
RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN TURKISH PRESIDENT "A resolution regarding the process of the ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta, has been accepted but unfortunately even if a resolution has been accepted, the ceasefire has not been implemented there for the past two days."
Turkey deployed special forces to the northwestern region of Afrin on Monday. On the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron told Erdogan in a phone call, that the ceasefire deal also applied to Afrin. Macron said France's monitoring of humanitarian access and chemical weapons was "total and permanent". Afterwards, Erdogan told reporters that he understood Macron's stance on the issue, but mentioned nothing about ending operations in Afrin.
