The Global Mobile Internet Conference is now underway in south China. Some 20-thousand people are expected to attend the four-day long event. On the first day of several keynote panels, Huawei's smartphone brand Honor, took the spotlight, announcing a brand new chipset known as the Honghu 818.
RUBEN RODRIGUEZ GLOBAL PR MANAGER, HONOR "So the Honghu 818 is the most advanced processor for smart screens that's available in the market right now. It has 8 cores, which is unusual in a lot of smart screens. Apart from that, it also has 7 image processing and sound processing technologies, that will be basically be able to convert 8K video footage, which is the highest video quality in the market, to any screen size, and this kind of contact will be able to be shared across multiple platforms."
Domestic and international developers are showing off virtual technology and the latest in robotics. Meanwhile, YouDao, China's largest education tech company, is employing AI in one of its translation products. It can can recognize 20 words and deliver a translation in just one second.
YOLANDA ZHU OVERSEAS BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, YOUDAO "Guangzhou is a portal for international trading in China, for a long time. And now we are adding some new 'genes', such as technology, AI, OCR and other new formats of companies into this new communication chances. So I think Guangzhou is not only a place to do the traditional business like import or export, but also technology import and export."
This gathering of tech gurus is also going beyond exploring how people use technology and how it's developed. Experts are discussing how the fields of AI, Big Data, the Internet of Things and 5G, will bring societal benefits to mankind
DEVANAND RAMIAH RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE, UNDP CHINA "For us coming from the United Nations, one of the focuses is how do we harness technology for good? But this event itself is pretty interesting because it brings together multiple stakeholders, from civil society, entrepreneurs, tech developers, and other businessmen together with academicians, and provides a platform to have a collective dialogue as well as showcase some of the things that are happening in terms of the future."
OMAR KHAN GUANGZHOU, GUANGDONG PROVINCE "GMIC draws on parallels similar to events like CES and even the Mobile World Congress. But perhaps what makes it more relevant, is its strategic location here in Guangzhou. With plans to turn the Pearl River Delta region into a global tech and financial hub, it's no wonder that the focus is turning to south China. Omar Khan, CGTN, Guangzhou."
