China's Political Season: 13th CPPCC National Committee concludes its first plenary session
[]
The closing meeting for this year's session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference has been held at the Great Hall of the People here in Beijing. The work report of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee and a resolution on an amendment to the CPPCC charter were approved. Chairman Wang Yang says the CPPCC should help all parties improve their idealistic identity to socialism with Chinese characteristics. Our reporter, Wang Hui, brings us the details.
Nearly 2200 CPPCC members took part in this year's Two Sessions. They turned in nearly 5400 proposals addressing various issues, from left-behind children and pollution to education and medical reforms in rural areas.
The newly elected chairman of the CPPCC's National Committee, Wang Yang, who is also the vice premier of the State Council, addressed the closing ceremony.
WANG YANG CPPCC CHAIRMAN "The CPC leadership is the most defining character of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the biggest political reality of China. Taking a clear stand in politics is the essential requirement of CPPCC. The CPC leadership is the fundamental political guarantee for the CPPCC to proceed and make progress. It is also the political principle that we have to adhere to. We need to promote the consensus of all party groups and people from all other groups to identify with the CPC understanding of socialism with Chinese characteristics, in politics, thoughts, theories and emotions. We must establish 'the Four Consciousness', 'Four Confidence' and voluntarily accept the CPC leadership, as well as safeguard General Secretary Xi Jinping's core position, safeguard the central politic committee authority and unify the leadership. When it comes to critical matters, such as the institution, path, flag and orientation, we must have united thoughts, aware and steps, in order to make sure that the CPPCC has a correct political orientation."
Since this is the first session of the CPPCC's 13th national committee, half of all members are new. They believe they gained a lot from the experience.
ZHANG KAILI CPPCC MEMBER "I am a new member. Although I care about politics and state affairs, I have never attended a meeting like this. I now have access to detailed content, I still have a lot to learn."
This is also the first Two Sessions since the 19th Communist Party of China National Congress held in October last year. The members believe they carry important responsibilities in advising the government and helping it live up to the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress.
LIANG YAN CPPCC MEMBER "At the beginning, I felt so proud. But with the meeting and learning these days, I feel a tremendous burden and responsibility on my shoulders."
The CPPCC also demonstrated openness by providing more access to journalists this year.
It held three news conferences focusing on economic development, people's livelihood, and those involving China's non-Communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce.
For the first time, a delegates' corridor was also set up for CPPCC members to take questions from the press.
WANG HUI BEIJING "Besides putting forward their proposals, China's political advisors were closely involved in policy-making by giving their advice on a series of major decisions this year. These include the amendment of the Constitution, the reform of governmental institutions, and establishing the law on national supervision. Wang Hui, CGTN, Beijing."
