We begin with the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The anticipated raising of the curtain on the Olympiad taking on added importance with the participation of the DPRK. The delegation entering the stadium, in unison, with their neighbors, and hosts, South Korea. A symbolic gesture that could have lasting effects on the Korean Peninsula. All taking place before the cauldron was lit by one of South Korea's greatest athletes. Our Tracey Holmes has details from the main stadium in Pyeongchang.
It was a night of subtlety and surprise, and a moment of diplomacy. For the first time since the Korean Peninsula was divided more than 70 years ago a member of the DPRK ruling family came to South Korea - Kim Yo Jong, a senior official and a sister of leader Kim Jong Un.
Diplomacy made way for the nights many images of hope and a United World. The faces of children emerging into a future dominated by peace. The yin and yang symbol at the heart of the South Korean flag was not only a sign of patriotism for the locals but a welcome message of harmony for international viewers.
From shots of snow boarders flying down the slopes with the Olympic flame burning. To the arrival of 12,000 drones, like a swarm of bees, that formed the Olympic Rings - it was a mix of human endeavour and achievement along with the wizardry of technology. Of course there were fireworks...
And lasershows...
And the penetrating sounds of traditional Korean drums. It mattered not that it was a frigid night with a mountain chill. The arrival of the teams had the spectators on their feet. Even from outside the arena the eruption of applause was evident. China was led out by three time gold medal winning short track speed skater Zhou Yang. The Americans had US Vice President Mike Pence on his feet. And there were gasps when Tonga's summer Olympian, turned Winter Olympian, Pita Taufatofua wore his same national dress as he did in Rio.
But of course the biggest cheer was for the unified team of the DPRK and South Korea - marching together to reinforce this games message of peace.
But the moment everyone had waited for: The traditional lighting of the cauldron and the secret was unveiled: Olympic champion figure skater and one of South Korea's most recognised faces - Kim Yu Na showing the grace and poise she was renowned for as a competitor. She's inspired the nation many times, but never with an audience of billions that were tuned in from around the world on Friday evening.
