Russian police on Saturday broke up an opposition rally, in Saint Petersburg, against President Vladimir Putin on his 65th birthday.
Saint Petersburg is the country’s second-largest city and Putin’s hometown. Over 60 people were detained by riot police, according to AFP citing a monitoring group OVD-Info. Reuters, on the other hand, said at least 10 arrests were made citing a witness.
The demonstration was held by supporters of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The 41-year-old opposition leader has organized waves of protests this year. He has urged supporters to help him get registered for the next presidential election.
Putin has not announced whether he will enter the race.
