Here's what China's been saying about the ministers' visits. Early last week, the foreign ministry said, that as President Xi Jinping's special envoy, Wang Yi's presence demonstrated the countries' special relationship.
Two days later, after speculation Wang had cancelled his trip, the ministry confirmed it had just been briefly delayed. Meanwhile, the Chinese defense ministry said Wei Fenghe's participation would advance the development of Russia-China cooperation in defence and military.
The ministry added they were each other's most important strategic partners and described their ties as the best example of major-power relations.
