Korean Peninsula Diplomacy: Recent ties between US and DPRK
[]
Now, let's review the latest between the US and the DPRK. The US continues to enhance its sanctions against the DPRK -- with the latest just announced a couple of days ago.
A window for dialogue between the US and the DPRK was possible at last month's PyeongChang Winter Olympics. But the meeting between US Vice President Mike Pence and the sister of DPRK leader Kim Jong Un was eventually canceled. Ties were much worse last year -- with US President Donald Trump calling Kim Jong-un a "Rocket Man" on a "suicide mission".
The US and the DPRK have been long-term foes, and have been engaged in a dangerous nuclear standoff in the last two decades. Currently, the US has 30,000 military personnel stationed in South Korea.
