Foldable smartphone is still beyond the reach of many. But 5G is soon to arrive. One of the hotspots at the Import Expo was the 5G network exhibit. While a human takes about 300 milliseconds to blink, it takes only one millisecond for 5G signals to travel between terminals - much faster than the current 4G system. Yang Chengxi shows us some mind-blowing 5G applications on display at the expo. Blink and you'll miss it.
Companies gearing up for what could be a 5G revolution are allowing Shanghai a sneak peak. China is expected to be the biggest market for 5G networks.
CHANG JIANG, CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER NOKIA SHANGHAI BELL "I think this is a very big platform for everybody to move on with the whole global success of 5G to finally benefit the whole industry, and also the end consumers."
The minimal latencies combined with broad bandwidth enable smart manufacturing, and of course a whole range of consumer applications. From live streams of virtual reality images and 8K videos to playing games that you don't even have to download.
YANG CHENGXI SHANGHAI "Check out this home security system. The video feed from this camera is analyzed by a server elsewhere. On the screen, it documents my arrival and shows my estimated age. This kind of real-time analysis wouldn't be possible without a broadband 5G connection."
CHANG JIANG, CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER NOKIA SHANGHAI BELL "At this moment right here, we are already covered by a 5G signal. With Shanghai MCC, Nokia has built an ultra-dense network in this pavilion."
All of these make people feel like commercially available 5G is just around the corner.
CHANG JIANG, CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER NOKIA SHANGHAI BELL "We have signed major framework contracts with the top Chinese operators like China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, in total worth over 2 billion euros."
Industry standard issues have largely been resolved this year, and companies say they are ready for phase one of 5G deployment, expected to start by late 2019. YCX, CGTN, SHANGHAI.
