Using the Chinese horoscope or zodiac as an inspiration for artwork stems from Taoism, says Xi Xiaoqin, a paper-cutting master based in Shanghai. She is now one of the few remaining professional Chinese paper-cutting masters around, and has been practicing the art for more than 40 years.

“Each horoscope symbolizes something different, but they all have positive meanings to them," Xi says. "The Year of the Dog symbolizes friendship and loyalty. Using the Chinese Lunar New Year horoscope for artistic inspiration is normal because we all want good luck, but the ways it is shown through traditional artwork and modern-day designs are obviously different.”

Not only is the Chinese horoscope used as an inspiration in traditional folk art, but multi-national companies now often adopt it during the Spring Festival. Panerai, an Italian luxury watch brand, has been releasing horoscope watches for 10 years now. This year, Panerai even increased the number of exclusive horoscope watches from 66 to 88 worldwide. Many customers believe the design perfectly captures both Western and Eastern elements.

Whether it is traditional Chinese folk art or high-end Italian designer timepieces, the usage of the horoscope during Chinese New Year festivities is meant to bring good luck to everyone.
