World Cup fans in Shanghai aren't just watching the games. They're also busy collecting jerseys and the football cards for the top national teams. Our Zhang Yue has more.
Portugal fan Huang Lei gets excited when talking about his card collection - especially the card autographed by Portugual star Cristiano Ronaldo. Huang says he's been collecting cards for 20 years and that he's got more than 1,000 in his collection.
HUANG LEI FOOTBALL CARD COLLECTOR "Some cards can cost up to 10,000 yuan. It's normal to spend tens of thousands of yuan to buy three or four cards. Many loyal fans are crazy because of the World Cup. They are keen on collecting cards of some teams and trading them."
A box of World Cup player cards costs between 700 yuan and 2,000 yuan for 80 to 120 cards. Of course, fans don't know which players they will get in the box. So it becomes a game and they enjoy trying to get cards of top players like Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Mo Salah and Neymar. National team jerseys are also popular among fans during the World Cup. The owner of this jersey shop in downtown Huangpu District is both a fan and collector, which is why he opened the business. He said total turnover during the World Cup is expected to reach 1 million yuan.
KEN DENG JERSEY SHOP OWNER "We get about double the number of usual customers during the World Cup and we also have customer service staff online to take orders. I think jerseys are one of the best things, as someone who can not play football can at least buy a jersey and try it on. I think this can be an expansion of the football culture."
At this store in Jing'an District, customers are checking national team jerseys, gloves and football shoes.
PAN JIAWEN CUSTOMER "Tonight Uruguay will play against Saudi Arabia and I am a huge fan of Uruguay striker Luis Suarez. I have watched 12 matches already since the World Cup started last week."
JORDAN ZHU, SENIOR ASSISTANT MANAGER PUMA "Three of the four teams that our brand sponsored have had great results so far, and we definitely see more football fans coming to our store to pick up World Cup items. Some of them will ask our staff for the schedule of matches even if they don't buy anything."
Zhu also said people now wear jerseys in public more frequently than before. He said in the past most people only wore them to pubs to watch a game or when they were playing football.
