How can Chinese people get to know the people of Africa better, and vice versa? One Ghanaian in Beijing is showing us. Berthold Ackon dedicates himself to settling misunderstandings between China and Africa by making videos online. With a viewership of over 70 million, Ackon serves as a communications link between the two sides. Our reporter Li Jianhua spends a day with him to find out how he does it.
BERTHOLD ACKON GHANAIAN VLOGGER "My name is Berth, also known as WODE MAYA.
Every morning when I wake up, I just read my comments on Youtube, because I'm a Youtuber and a vlogger here in China.
I have over 70 million views on Youtube. As you can see, a lot of people know me on the internet.
I've been doing videos focused on China and Africa for the past five years in the middle Kingdom.
I would start my day with a cup of tea every morning, just to get ready for another interesting episode - some of them could be very controversial or disheartening.
Each episode usually starts with AIYA MAYA, AIYA WODE MAYA, which means "oh my god" in the northeastern Chinese dialect. And this is how I start my work."
This is Berth's routine every morning and today, I am joining him to talk about my experience in Africa.
His topics vary all the time based on his viewer suggestions. Some are funny, some are thorny. He says his aim is to bridge African and Chinese cultures.
BERTHOLD ACKON GHANAIAN VLOGGER "I've changed a lot of people's perception about China, and also I've changed a lot of Chinese people's perception about Africa. I have a friend here in China. The guy wasn't my friend, but after watching my videos, he became my friend and he was like to take me to Africa."
Berth says it is through his travels that he can reach out to more people and to give himself a deeper understanding of both Chinese and African cultures.
BERTHOLD ACKON GHANAIAN VLOGGER "This year, I'm giving myself one year just to travel more, and go to different parts of Africa, like all countries of Africa. I wish, if I had the power, I'll visit every country of Africa to make videos. I just came back from a trip around China. That one is easy. You know, you go and come back and just to show what is happening in China. That's it."
And just how dedicated is he to his cause? Berth actually quit his job. So he could concentrate on his efforts to give people different views of China and Africa. LJH, CGTN, BJ.
