Eleven Chinese warships sailed into the East Indian Ocean this month amid the political crisis in the Maldives. Concerns have since been raised over Chinese military deployment in the region.

The Defense Ministry of the Maldives has denied reports of Chinese naval movement around its country. The tiny island country is now under a state of emergency. According to China's official military media, a fleet was conducting rescue training exercises. It says such exercises are an annual routine during the Chinese New Year holiday.
