Chinese tech giant ZTE in a press conference today, says it opposes Washington's unilateral moves which damages global industrial chain, adding the company will strive to further develop its own technology. This is in response to a US supply ban against ZTE for 7 years. Jiang Shaoyi has the details.
China's number two phone maker is angered by the 7-year sanction.
YIN YIMIN ZTE GENERAL MANAGER "ZTE strongly opposes the decision made by the US Commerce Department. We are also against any unfair and unreasonable punishment. We also object to politicizing any trade issues. The US government is blowing this issue way out of proportion. That has brought a negative impact on our company."
ZTE earlier in a statement said the US had ignored its efforts to comply with American laws, which includes agreeing to pay as much as 1.2 billion US dollars in fines last year over allegations of doing business with Iran. The telecom equipment maker also added it is open to dialogue. However, the US Commerce Department said there would be no room for negotiation before the ban finishes its effect. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the US move is actually trade protectionism in disguise.
HUA CHUNYING SPOKESPERSON, CHINA FOREIGN MINISTRY "This exposes its hegemonism attitude that the US should be the only nation in procession of such technologies, rather than other countries. I have to point out, the US repeatedly setting limits to the two countries' trade and investment in technology is a practice of protectionism in disguise of national security concerns."
ZTE also displayed its determination in becoming self-sufficient in technology.
YIN YIMIN ZTE GENERAL MANAGER "We still need to increase our input in technological research. It will always be better to rely on ourselves than on others. As a global enterprise, we oppose US unilateralism move which damages global industrial chain."
But that's far from being easy. China currently is the world's largest consumer market for semiconductor products, importing over 230 billion US dollars worth of chips last year.
Telecom equipment maker Huawei has also announced it will use 15 percent of its sales revenue to invest in technological research and development in the next decade.
For now, a rough battle may be clouding the future of Chinese tech firms. But as saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. Jiang Shaoyi CGTN
